"Attending your college was one of the best decisions I ever made." That's me telling the FIT rep how much I love his school. Reagan had zero interest in taking to him; but I think it sets the stage. I didn't graduate from there, yet that's the place i "went to college". Finding Mel and some good friends made a difference in my life. Those were great days.
But last night was about Reagan. 60 or so colleges in the high school gym. She hated the idea of going. She hated the idea that we were going with her. I think she hated the idea of going through the door of the unknown - since she was little Reagan loves a routine and deviation spells disaster.
I remember thinking, "so many places, how could one possible decide to choose just one?". So I suicided and only applied to one. That made deciding a bit easier. Gosh, I was so young back then.
So I heard Reagan say "science" and "biology" which leads me to believe she's interested in sciences. That was part of reasoning behind saying "OK" to a two-week in Honduras marine bio thing she's doing next summer; it should give her a good idea of where she wants to be in that food chain.
But so many colleges last night! We only spoke with a couple. Brown (spoke to that guy for a good 30 min!), URI. We missed the Dartmouth guy - he flew out early. What did we learn?
I have no idea. My marketing background quickly pointed out that these folks all say the same thing "oh, science? Yes, well, we just completed building 3 new science buildings and our professors are the best." The cynic in me says these folks are just sales people selling a $400,000 piece of paper.
Maybe we learned there's no substitute for getting on campus. Maybe we learned Reagan can get through this (even if she was the only one that didn't believe it). Maybe we learned I didn't learn much about this process, even going through it twice.
