You won't find, "squirrel killer" on my CV. Just the same, I managed to create a squirrels worst nightmare; and make a lesson you can learn from. See, I've come to realize my job in life is not the be the rousing success you think I am, rather, I need to be an example of what not to do. So with that frame of thinking I give you: how to accidentally kill a squirrel.
Yesterday, Reagan and I took advantage of the beautiful weather and went on a hike to find rocks. I'll do anything for a science experiment, so off we trekked into the town woods. Upon our return, we were met by Mel (who suprisingly hadn't called to ask why my 5-min trip turned into an hour) but presented a look that meant one thing: toilet is backed up again. To my shock, the look means two things now: toilet is backed up and I've a dead animal to collect. My job description at home really needs improving.
So I imagine Mel was wandering aimlessly around our backyard to discover a keg bucket (or stuffed animal bucket in my world) was filled with water. It was sitting by a fence and collected the rain water (we got dumped on last week). Mel was going to dump the water out (about 9 inches in there) when she noticed a floater.
It should be noted that my family has a history of hating squirrels. Most notably, you might recall my father not just refurbishing an air pistol to stop the "thieves" stealing his bird food from the "squirrel proof" bird feeder. But taking it a step further added a laser sight to the pistol to better his aim and lethal power.
Anyhow, I oppose my fathers position and find his selective feeding deplorable. Love all nature or none of it, that is my take.
So the poor squirrel must have fallen in or desired a quick bath, only then realizing it was too deep and the sides were to slick to extract ones self from the tub. A sad image to conjure up for sure.
So, remember not to keep tubs in your yard collecting rain water. It can breed bugs in the spring (possibly other times, i am no bug-ologist), and create a hazard for falling (or bathing inspired) squirrels.
I fully expect to find my fathers yard covered with water filled tubs on my next visit.
